New York Red Bulls Secure a 4:2 Victory over Charlotte FC
Wednesday, the New York Red Bulls (RBNY) hosted Charlotte FC (CLT) in the Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. It was an exciting match that showcased both strong offense and precise defense, as well as lots of drama.
While it could’ve been a nail-biting match, W. Bogacz scored at the 14th minute with an assist from K. Duncan, giving New York a lead into the game. Determination was radiating off of the pitch by both teams. In the 26th minute, K. Vargas scored a goal for Charlotte, tying the game. In the rush of the moment, New York responded quickly and regained control as M. Sofo found the back of the net three minutes later with an assist from W. Carmona. The first half ended with a yellow card for Charlotte player P. Biel and a score of 2:1 in favor of New York.
The second half started with two quick yellow cards for Charlotte- W. Zaha in the 64th minute and 68th minute for A. Privett. With no time to waste, E. Choupo-Moting made the penalty kick, taking New York to 3:1 in the 70th minute. RBNY’s Captain D. Edelman received a yellow for New York, and both teams took advantage within the next few minutes to make subs and finish out the game strong. After subbing in L. Abada and T. Smalls, Charlotte came back with energy, and Abada scored another point in the 76th minute. With the Red Bulls leading 3:2, there was still time for Charlotte to make a comeback; tension remained high from both the team and the fans. R. Donkor (RBNY) and A. Malanda (CLT) both received yellow cards with just mere seconds left in the game. After a penalty review, VAR showed that New York would receive another penalty kick. Choupo-Moting took advantage and scored, ending the game 4:2 with another win for the New York Red Bulls.
Jumping into the match statistics, RBNY had a 43.9% possession rate, 10 shots-5 shots on goal, and two blocked. They completed 485 passes with 81.4% passing accuracy, earned five corners, one offsides call, committed 15 fouls, and received two yellow cards. While they were expected only to make 2.1 goals, they exceeded that by scoring four, along with four saves on goal. CLT had a 56.1% possession rate, 12 shots-6 shots on goal, and one blocked shot. They completed 696 passes with an 87.5% passing accuracy and earned two corners. With no offsides calls against them, Charlotte managed 11 fouls and four yellow cards. Charlotte was expected to score two goals and met those expectations with only one save from their goalkeeper.
As the match ended, RBNY walked off the pitch, heads held high, proud of their win against Charlotte. Their next game will be held on May 31st, 2025, against Atlanta United. After the energy and determination of tonight's match, it is clear that New York will be working for their successive win this weekend!
