The Fastest Field Rush Ever?
SCOTT STADIUM— The 3-1 Virginia Cavaliers hosted the almighty No. 8 ranked Florida State Seminoles on Friday night. In what was expected to be a clear win for FSU, we were met with surprise.
Virginia controlled the entire game, never being down a single point. We could tell FSU’s offense looked off after the first quarter when they scored zero points. It was very uncharacteristic for FSU who had the number ranked scoring offense according to PFF. Eventually they showed why their offense is so powerful, but yet again it was not enough to fend off against the pesky hoos.
Virginia battled and took this game to double overtime and ended up winning as quarterback, Chandler Morris, ran it in and then completed the double overtime rule of going for two successfully.
In college football rules after the first overtime a team must go for two in the event they score a touchdown. Tony Elliot, head coach for Virginia, was unbeknownst to this rule. He held up “one finger” signalling going for the extra point, until the referees let him know that they have to go for two. Oddly enough, the time had stopped due to Virginia's mental error causing FSU head coach, Mike Norvell, to lose it on the sideline asking why the playclock stopped.
In the end, it didn’t matter that Virginia had extra time to run the 2-pt conversion play because FSU could not get the job done. Virginia powered to a 46-38 over the No. 8 ranked team in the nation. A complete upset.
We saw many plays during this tight and chippy game that caused some referee reviews and team reviews. One of the coolest moments of the night was being able to get into the official review booth of the ACC Network and hear what goes on when reviewing a play. The play in question was a Duce Robinson bobble in the endzone that was ruled a touchdown, but after the official review was overturned due to never having complete control of the ball. And hearing it all from the officials in the booth was second to none.
“We just can’t thank the ACC enough, for allowing us to listen to that conversation”
“I LOVED getting to hear thru the review there on the UVA 2 point conversion… Let’s do more of that @NFLOfficiating”
-ESPN College Gameday Host Pat McAfee said on X
A very cool moment where fans can hear and see the angles that the officials are reviewing and how they talk it over. We have not seen something like this on a national broadcast really ever, and just as McAfee said he’d like to see it incorporated into the professional sports world as well!
In my opinion though, the coolest moment of the night after an incredible game, upset, in primetime fashion we MUST give credit to the fans of Virginia in the student section. Scott Stadium was rocking all night, fans giving middle fingers, loud cheers, and school pride was on full display throughout the game. But the second FSU went for their last play on a 4th and 12 heave to the endzone and missed, THOUSANDS of fans sprinted on the field within 3 seconds. Trampling over FSU players and Virginia players alike. It was such a surreal experience to see it unfold that quickly. Their storming the field gained much traction on X and all over social media.
“What a field storm. CFB is the best”
“The Virginia field storm may be the fastest field storm I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure the FSU receiver even made it out alive.”
-Barstool’s Dave Portnoy
Just an absolutely absurd scene that was legendary. THIS IS WHY WE LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL!
What a game, what an upset, what a night! Thank you college football!
